Speaker Side Chat with Vega about his Viral Hit, Life, and More

Up-and-coming artist, Vega, has been soaring with his alluring EP, ‘Launch’. Since the EP release in January, his single ‘One Day’ has caught fire on SoundCloud and Spotify- hitting nearly 500,000 plays on Spotify alone. With the help of Uprise Music, ‘One Day’ became a collaboration between Vega and New York duo, Flight School, while also featuring female vocalist Angeline.

Despite the struggles they found while working with so many parties on a single project, these young talents managed to make it work- bringing an authenticity and style to the table that could do nothing, but complement each other’s sounds perfectly.

We had the amazing opportunity to sit down with Vegas to talk about his music and life. Check out our exclusive interview with Vega below:

Q: Where did you grow up and how did your music career start?

A: I was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH. I started taking piano lessons when I was seven and then eventually transitioned to guitar when I was 11. When I was in 4th grade my best friend Elijah and I were in a Blink 182 cover band (haha). While doing that I became super interested in the process of recording music. I had a karaoke machine that allowed you to record multiple loops (basically like an old-school 8 track) and so I began to write my own songs accompanied with guitar and recorded on the karaoke machine. Needless to say they mostly sounded like shit but I fell in love with the process of piecing songs together.

Q: Who influenced you to produce?

A: Someone I really look up to and who inspired me to really take producing seriously is Ryan Leslie. He began posting in-studio sessions of him making beats from scratch and I was captivated by his energy and creativity. I wanted to emulate his vibe in the studio when I worked on my own music.

Q: How has your music developed?

A: When I was 12 I got a Mac computer and used GarageBand to produce, write songs, and record. I was addicted, locked away in my basement making music 24/7. I don’t think my music was ever unbearable but you can ask my mom or sister who would have to listen to it 24/7 throughout the house and they might give you a different opinion.

Q: What style do you classify your music?

A: I would say my music is kind of genre-less. I incorporate influences of EDM, hip hop, alternative punk, and mainstream pop into the majority of my music. Music is heading to a place where genres will be a thing of the past. I would classify my music as saucy.

Q: What other genres or sub genres do you want to experiment with?

A: I’ve written country songs, composed orchestra pieces…I really love doing anything musical.

Q: If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?

A: It’s definitely tough for me to pick one artist that I would love to collaborate with but right now I would have to go with Post Malone. I know we would vibe super hard and he does beer bongs in the studio so a session with him would be a good time for sure.

Q: Your stage name is ‘Vega’, how did that come about?

A: My dad and I were driving from LA back to Cincinnati and I was going through a lot in my life at that time. I was feeling kind of lost and we were in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico. My dad gave me some of the best advice I’ve ever gotten and at that moment I felt like I had a clear mission, I looked up and the only road for 100 miles was Vega road. I looked up ‘Vega’ on my phone and it happens to be the 5th brightest star in the sky and astronomers say it is arguably the most important star in the sky after the sun. Vega (the star) was the northern pole star around 12,000BC. At a time when I was feeling lost, Vega made me feel like I was gonna be okay.

Q: Talk to me more about ‘One Day’. Did the result of that meet your vision?

A: ‘One Day’ started as an instrumental about 2 years ago. I had the idea for the hook line ‘One Day’. I asked my friend Angeline to come sing it for me. She came to the studio and we wrote the song together and she absolutely KILLED it. She made the song her own. She’s an amazing writer, has the voice of an angel, and is an all-around amazing person. My friend and sometimes-manager Mike Flom linked me up with a DJ duo called Flight School who took the song to the next level. Be on the look-out for them, they’re incredibly talented. All parties involved did an amazing job and I’m super thankful for everything.

Q: Is this a common sound that people should anticipate on hearing from you?

A: The sound of One Day is pretty different for me. I usually do more rhythmic/urban pop/EDM and One Day has more of a Euro-pop vibe, I would expect more urban pop/EDM from me in the near future but who knows!

Q: If you could picture yourself in 10 years where do you hope to be?

A: In 10 years I hope to have more number 1’s than Drake, run my own label, have founded many charities, and to have fixed a lot of problems that I see plaguing people around me everyday. Especially young adults with mental illness, I want to use music as a platform to get people the help they need.
