Have you ever wondered how a record player works? Sure, we know that there’s a stylus, a vinyl, and some sorcery involved – but if you want to get down to the nitty-gritty of the operation, Applied Science takes us to the core of what’s happening every time that you play a vinyl.

Using a scanning electron microscope, a used record needle, and a bit of an old album – we can see our favorite pastime in action.

We don’t know about you, but for us it’s infinitely mind-blowing to realize that the rough, jagged grooves in the record somehow transmit one of the greatest gifts that mankind has brought to the universe: music.

It’s a mesmerizing sight to see how the simple movements of a needle translate to drum tracks, guitar riffs, vocal croons, and bass lines – and one can’t help but be amazed at the ingenuity of our species.

People rule.
